I actually think that James is in love with Cortez, they have a lot of dialog together. When Cortez is shot down James is quite upset.

Then, oh my gosh, there's Normandy Park – a real gem. It's my secret spot for thinkin’, refreshin’, and sometimes even catchin’ a late-night gig.
